New Balance 990
The New Balance 990 began as a premium running line and evolved through multiple numbered generations. The family now combines performance-derived cushioning, Made in USA production and lifestyle demand, but each version has a different upper, midsole and fit profile.
Version identity
Always distinguish v1 through v6 rather than comparing every 990 as the same product. The 990v6 makes one of the largest visual and underfoot changes in the series, removing the traditional midfoot saddle and adding FuelCell foam alongside ENCAP support.
Fit and production details
New Balance offers multiple widths, making width code as important as numerical size. M990GL6 pairs grey mesh with pigskin suede and synthetic overlays. Pairs produced after summer 2023 may use a US flag emblem at the heel instead of the earlier flying New Balance logo; New Balance recognizes both versions.
